what is a domain name?

All websites have a domain name, it is the address where people find them. They all start with www. and are usually, but not always followed by the company's name. Domain names can end in many formats: .co.uk, .com, .eu, .biz, .info (these are called tld's).

how do I choose a domain name?

It is best to use a name related to your website for example your company name, the name of your product or service. Using a location can be a wise move too, if you are the only company which offer your products or services within a set area. But do bare in mind that if you make your domain name too long or too complicated, your customers may forget it or miss spell it.

Also remember that your domain name must only consist of letters, numbers or dashes (-). No spaces.

which domain ending (tld) should I choose?

If your are a UK based company who only supply products or services within the UK, then we will suggest you have a domain ending in .co.uk. If you own a UK based global business then you would be better with a .co.uk as well as .com (co.uk and .com are the most popular).

You will find many web users will try and find your website by typing your company name into the browsers address bar followed by a tld, particularly if they have seen you advertised somewhere. The most likely tld they will try is .co.uk or .com. Therefore you choosing one of these will give them a better chance of finding who they are looking for.
